Great news! Traveling to Cuba is not as difficult as you may think.
Early in 2017, I traveled a solo trip to Cuba. I flew to Cuba with Delta, and JetBlue for the flight back. My flights round-trip were about $250. My Airbnb home costed $136 and my Airbnb dancing experience costed $66. Including food and transportation, this trip costed me about $500 for four days and three nights.
I stayed in a very spacious private room in what’s known as a “casa particular” (aka Airbnb) in Vedado for only ~$30 per night with a lady named Marta. Marta welcomed me into her home for 3 nights. I gave her 5 stars because, she made me feel very comfortable, she is very organized with multiple guests staying at once, her home is beautiful- the view from the indoor balcony is gorgeous! All of the other guests that I interacted with were very nice, and I am sure this is because she attracts good people to stay in her home. The room was very spacious and I had my own bathroom. When my shower drain was clogged, she was very communicative and called a plumber to fix the clog.. I was very appreciative of this. Marta had a housekeeper who was very nice. In addition to a friendly housekeeper, breakfast was delicious!
I attended a 3-day salsa dance Airbnb experience called “La Salsera” . For only ~$33 per day, you can learn the local Cuban salsa dance called casino, you can party with the locals, and meet Milly’s circle of friends and family. I felt apart of Milly’s family - something Milly made sure of. Milly is very welcoming and makes you feel included in her circle, which is full of the friendliest and exciting people in Habana. I highly recommend this experience if you enjoy dancing and getting a feel for local nightlife.
Although my trip to to Cuba was a solo trip, I always felt entertained and surrounded by welcoming and super friendly people. Milly's Airbnb salsa experience really immersed me in Cuban culture and I met so many great people. Being a dancer back in the US, I was ecstatic to be surrounded by such talented and passionate dancers. I highly recommend this experience if you are looking for an authentic Cuban nightlife/dance experience, are looking to learn some history of casino/salsa, and enjoy dancing. Milly welcomes you into her life and she doesn't miss a beat! The experience is a class, night out dancing and an afternoon of live music. But the experience goes well beyond the itinerary. I really enjoyed my time in Cuba thanks to Milly, her family and friends. Shoutout to Nina for being especially helpful and a great translator, too!
